Around town there are a lot of places to stop for a Kebob. Mediterranean, Greek, etc.. This place is great for a nice hit and run Kebob Stop. It's right on Gratiot, it's been there forever and it has a pretty broad menu so you can get whatever you like. I however, only had eyes for a Kebob and these were great! A huge skewer, end to end with plump juicy chunks of meat with onion and green pepper between. In addition came an entire oblong plate of rice covered in what we call around here, "red sauce". Don't know for sure what makes red sauce so good, but I can't seem to get enough of it when polishing off a stick of Kebob meat. Upcharged the side salad and made it a full blown Greek. Choice of vinaigrette or Pink Greek and the Nikki's Pink always wins. I'm guessing it's Beet juice that makes it pink. Anyway, if you need a quick stop in or carry out, come by and chow down!

The best thing I can say about this spot is that it let's you feel good about supporting a small business while also providing nutrition adequate to your continued survival. But I would not recommend dining here if you're looking to actually enjoy your meal. The lemon rice soup (a Detroit staple and a favorite dish of mine) somehow managed to taste like liquid aluminum foil. It was a bland cream, lacking any hint of lemon or chicken. But what it lacked in rice, it made up for in lumps...so there's that. I ordered the soup after sending back my original order: pistachio encrusted French toast, to which I'd asked to add chocolate chips. What arrived was thick, stale Texas toast, lightly dipped in undercooked egg. The pistachio crust was non-existent. Instead, roughly 1 TSP of crushed pistachio and exactly 8 chocolate chips. Yes- I counted. On the other hand, the kids burgers are comparable in quality to an adults and are not preformed/frozen. I'm giving them the 2nd (mostly pity) star for that.

Best breakfast on the east side. Food is always fresh and service is always fast. Their dinners are great too, and did I mention the price is right on the money.

Stopped there today and had lunch. Ordered Fish and Mac-n-Cheese. It came with soup (French Onion) and a bread basket. Good value for the food. Nice, clean place, great location.

I ate dinner at Tropicana with my girlfriend. She ordered Chicken a la King, which included soup and salad (but the server didn't know that until we showed her on the menu...), and I ordered pork chops with cognac sauce and sauteed apples, which came with soup. First, we were served our soups. The chicken noodle soup was literally a bowl of egg noodles with 2 teaspoons of broth, 1 chunk of carrot, and a miniscule shred of chicken. The lemon rice soup was lemon goop with 10 grains of rice in the entire bowl. I ended up taking some of her noodles to toss into my soup to make up for the lack of rice. Her salad was a plate of lettuce with a wedge of unripened tomato. At this point, we were disappointed but looking forward to our meals, which took close to an hour to finally arrive. The pork chops were rubbery and overcooked, one much moreso than the other. The apples and cognac butter were pretty good, though. The mashed potatoes were chunky and real (as opposed to instant flakes...), which was a positive, but they were cold. Overall the dish was presented nicely, and had potential to be pretty good if the pork chops were cooked 10 minutes less. The chicken a la king did not look good. It was sauteed onions, chicken, and a load of green peppers in gravy slathered over biscuits. My girlfriend has a strong dislike for green peppers and it appeared as the main ingredient. The menu, which listed ingredients, did not say green peppers, otherwise she would have either ordered it without them or chose a different dish. I tasted the dish, it wasn't very good. After staring at the dish for about 10 minutes, and after I'd eaten half of my dinner already, the server comes and asks if we like our food. WThere obviously is an issue, since the chicken dish has been sitting at the edge of the table almost the entire time and has 2 bites taken out of it. My girlfriend explains her dislike of peppers and explains that she doesn't care for the dish. The server offers something else so that she doesn't leave hungry. She decides to have an order of Saganaki (flaming cheese), since that shouldn't take too long and we'd been there for quite some time at this point. I didn't mention my pork chops, but I had eaten most of them due to being hungry, so that wouldn't be fair. Although at one point, while trying to cut my pork chop, which was a task, I made a squeaking noise from the silverware and the plate, the noise produced when meat is too tough to cut. When this happened, the server asked if had made that noise and I told her that yes I had made that noise and it was from trying to cut the pork chop. She smiled but said nothing. The Saganaki arrives. It's fine. It is a piece of cheese flambeed with brandy and served with pita bread, not too difficult to prepare. At this point, we ask for our check and are ready to leave. We get our check to discover that we had been charged for the pork chop dinner, the saganaki, and $3 for a soup and $3 for a salad. This server explained that since we sent the chicken a la king back, we had to paid for the soup and salad since we ate them. So the $7.50 dinner that included soup and salad was now a $12.50 dinner because the saganaki didn't include those items. Are you kidding me? That's OK though we thought, because we have a buy one get one free coupon anyway (which was why we chose this place.) We go to the register to pay and were told we could not use our coupon since we didn't order 2 entrees. I pointed out that we did indeed order 2 entrees and I had to explain the circumstances to the woman at the register. I pointed out that since I was charged individually for the soup, the salad, and the saganaki, that it should be considered an entree. Had charges for the soup and salad not occurred, then I get it. But that wasn't the case. We asked to speak with the manager. He comes up and immediate goes on the defensive, speaking loudly and unprofessionally to us, saying about 10 times that he has owned this restaurant for 35 years. Well, good for you, but we just want to use this coupon and get out of here. After a few minutes of arguing, he decides to let us use the coupon and get a free entree. We also told the server that nothing was her fault and we could see that she was working for poor management. It was great to finally leave. On a side note, we were going to eat there a week ago, but there was a sign on the door explaining that their credit card machine was broken and they were only taking cash at the time. We didn't have cash on that day, so skipped it. On this visit that I am writing about, the sign was still on the door about the broken credit card machine. They had at least a week to get it fixed, that is unacceptable. Additionally, the menus were horrendous, They were ripped and falling apart, and some items were illegible due to wear and tear. On a positive note, the decor is very nice, modern, and updated. Too bad the food, menu, service, or management don't match up.

Without even going to this restaurant, I already have Ill feelings towards it due to one gentleman who answered the phone when I called to ask what time they closed. After nicely asking their business hours (around 10pm) the man on the other line disrespectfully hung up on me without saying anything but "CLOSED." Rude, man. Rude. Basically, Tropicana, fire the douche you have answering your phone.

I've been here several times. Mostly in the morning on the weekends and a couple of times after the bar. You get nice portions for your money and the food is above average for the style of restaurant that it is. I have no complaints. The staff is also friendly.

This is a place my mother likes. She's 78 and likes pretty standard non-exotic food. The Tropicana delivers on this and is smoke free to boot. You will get some homemade food here. The daily specials are where you'll find them. There are usually 3 housemade soups on the menu. The tomato marlina was interesting; it's tomato soup stuffed with orzo pasta and the waitress directs that you are to cover it in the grated parmesean on the table. The Greek salad dressing is house made and better than average. Bread was warm and nice too; we were served both pita and garlic bread. Prices are all under $10 and portions are generous.
